A Good Vegetarian, Yet A Good House Guest:

It may be tricky at times to eat outside of your own home if you practice vegetarianism. To become vegetarian is a great feat. There are definitely places that serve vegetarian meals but they do not surpass or even come close to the usual fast food restaurants in number. There may even be times that you chance upon a restaurant that will be willing to cook a purely vegetable meal for you but may not understand that strict vegetarians are particular even about the oil or cooking utensils used prior to cooking the meal. They may have been in contact and not filtered out for residue of the meat that was used to cook the previous meal.

This situation becomes even trickier when you are invited into a household that are not vegetarians. You would not want to impose upon the hospitality of your host, because it might entail added preparation for your needs. So, you will have to find ways to remain on your diet and at the same time a trouble-free guest.

By choosing not to eat meat and their byproducts is by no means a disability, it is a limitation set by you because of your beliefs about health benefits to your body. There are also sites out there on how to become vegetarian. Perhaps, if you have a food allergy, it would not be in bad taste to inform your host of this beforehand. I am sure they would rather know this prior to the meal rather than rushing about and finding some medicine for you to take, because to some people food allergies are critical and may even cause death.

It may be a good idea to bring up your dietary preference with your host before anything, but offer to help out around the house. Just because you have this limitation, this is no reason for your hosts to follow with your vegetarian discipline. It is highly likely, though, that they will accommodate your needs by making a small dish that would suit your requirements aside from their regular meals.

You may also need to bring some personal supplies, just in case the things that you need are not typically found around most households. You would not want to place an extra burden on your hosts by having to accommodate your food preferences which they do not normally buy for themselves — like soy milk, for example. Let them be aware that you are well enough to mind your own needs and will not further burden them for it.
